Bullnose step, laminated from 9 layers
The old stairs at the rectory were a 1960s replacement in softwood, and they had never suited the house. The new flight follows the line of the old one but turns at the bottom into a wide bullnose step, so the hallway feels like the front of the house again.
Bending the string
The outer string curves through ninety degrees at the bottom. We laminated it from nine thin layers of oak over a former in the workshop, glued it up in one go and left it a week before we touched it. It hasn’t moved a millimetre since.
