A long wooden dining table with twelve simple wooden chairs in a whitewashed barn with old oak trusses, low winter sun across the table top

Three boards, one tree

The owners wanted one table for everyone at Christmas. We found a cherry tree that had come down in a storm three winters before, sawn and stacked at a mill up the valley, and bought three boards cut one after the other from the trunk, so the grain runs on from one to the next.

The base is a trestle with drawbored tenons and no glue, so the table comes apart into five pieces. That was the only way it was ever getting through the barn door.

A thick live-edge table top on its trestle base in the workshop before oiling, a pale bench beside it and shavings on the concrete floor
