How it works
How a commission goes
From the first visit to the day we come back to check the doors: seven steps, usually twelve to sixteen weeks in all.
1 hour, at your home
Measure-up
We come to the room, talk through what you need and measure everything twice: walls, floors, the odd corner.
Within 2 weeks
Drawing
A scale drawing of the room and the piece, with a front, a plan and the details that matter.
With the drawing
Fixed quote
One price for making and fitting, the timber and finish named, nothing left to surprise you.
When you say yes
Deposit
Pay a deposit when you're happy and your weeks on the bench are booked.
6–10 weeks
Making
Timber is chosen, machined and left to settle, then cut, jointed and finished in the workshop.
1–5 days
Fitting
We fit it ourselves, scribed to your walls, and leave the room as we found it.
After 6 months
Aftercare
We come back after a season to adjust doors and drawers once the wood has met your house.

Arch 4: the bench, the boards, the light
Two joiners and a railway arch
Ashgrove Joinery started in 2009 in a lock-up behind the station and moved into Arch 4 when the railway let the arches go. It's a long brick tunnel with one big window at the end, cool in summer and dry all year, which is what timber likes.
There are two of us, and an apprentice two days a week. We draw everything by hand first, make it here and fit it ourselves. That keeps us to about twenty jobs a year, and we like it that way.
Before the visit
- A few photos of the room, and anything you've seen and liked
- Rough sizes, if you have them (we'll measure properly anyway)
- An idea of your budget, so we can draw something you'll build
- Where the sockets, pipes and radiators have to stay
What we make it from
- Oak
- European white oak, FSC certified, kiln dried, from a sawmill forty miles up the valley.
- Painted work
- Tulipwood for frames and doors: stable, fine-grained and takes paint beautifully.
- Boards
- Birch plywood for carcasses and drawer bottoms; no chipboard, no MDF carcasses.
- Finishes
- Hardwax oil on oak, water-based eggshell on paint, both low in solvents and easy to touch up.
Ten years on everything
Everything we make is guaranteed for ten years and fitting for two. Wood moves with the seasons, so we come back after six months to adjust doors and drawers, and any time after that if something isn't right.
If you move house, the guarantee stays with the furniture.
